With the MCU getting backlogged thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, news about a Captain Marvel sequel has been few and far between. But we do now know who will be playing the villain in the sequel…even though we don’t yet know who the villain actually is.
Zawe Ashton has been hired to play the antagonist in the anticipated sequel, but there’s no news yet on who the character actually is. Details are pretty light regarding the entire film. All we know is that Brie Larson will return, and she’ll be joined by Teyonah Parris from WandaVision as well as Iman Vellani from the upcoming Disney+ series Ms. Marvel.
Nia DaCosta, who directed Little Woods and the upcoming Candyman reboot, will helm the movie, with Megan McDonnell, a story editor for WandaVision, working on the script.
Ashton is probably best known to American audiences for her role in Netflix art satire Velvet Buzzsaw. To UKers, she’s had more of a presence on TV, having starred in university comedy Fresh Meat and comedy-drama Not Safe For Work.
This is obviously a huge break for Ashton. She’s a unique, quirky actor, and it seems unlikely that the studio would cast her and not seek to harness that. So whatever character she ends up playing will probably be memorable.
We’ll wait for more news regarding the film, which is currently scheduled to be released on November 11, 2022.
