Brad Bird Developing Musical As His Next Project | Film News

After finally completing his long-awaited sequel to The Incredibles in 2018, many have been wondering what is next for director Brad Bird. Prior to Incredibles 2, his film Tomorrowland was a box office bomb and reportedly gave him little options but to move forward on an Incredibles sequel next.

But the box office success of the superhero follow-up now gives him options, and it sounds like he’ll be trying something a little different.

During an interview at the BAFTA Tea Party, Bird confirmed that he is indeed already working on a new project, and that it is a musical. He mentioned working with frequent collaborator and Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino, who will be handling the music on the project, before revealing it is likely to be a hybrid of animation and live-action:

“I’m trying to work on my next thing. It’s a musical, actually. I don’t know anything about musicals, so I figure I should do this because I’m deathly afraid of it and that sounds like a cool thing. […] It’s a project I’ve been wanting to make a long time. It’s got about 20 minutes of animation in it”, Bird said during the brief interview.

The director confirmed that it’s an original project, but there aren’t any other details and obviously this is in the very earliest stages of development.

But considering that Bird got his start on The Simpsons, before taking animation to new levels with films such as The Iron Giant and Ratatouille (he also helmed the excellent Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, too), any project he’s involved in is worth getting excited about. We’ll wait for more news on his untitled musical.
