A few weeks ago, we were all taken by surprise by a strange and isolated trailer featuring actors John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr. The entire clip was drowned by music coming from a jukebox playing “I think We’re Alone Now” by James and the Shondells, all the while, the action present got bleaker by the minute. It wasn’t until when the title card appeared, did we realise what it was all about, a story supposedly set within J.J. Abrams’ Cloverfield universe.

Up until this point no other information has been revealed regarding the film or its premise, only that Abrams (as producer) described it as a “blood relative” to his 2008 monster film. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly at the SAG awards, the film’s leading actress made comments that shed some light regarding its narrative focus. “It’s so much about just the actors interacting with each other and that tension that builds, just all wondering if they are who they say the are, if they’re telling the truth or not, and really wondering what’s outside“.

She further implied that the actors know what’s going on outside the underground bunker, but they were urged not to share any details to keep the mystery alive. “As production went on there were rewrites, as there usually are, but nothing that was major. It was always something that I knew we weren’t going to be able to talk about until people saw the movie“.

So far, there are some key differences that could be spotted between the films. The original featured a found footage format, which chronicled its cast trying to escape the Cloverfield monster attacking New York city. 10 Cloverfield Lane however appears to be a little more traditional, focusing more on the characters rather than the action. The film is slated for release this March, and we look forward to what this “spin-off/sequel” might have in store.
