The remake of 80s film The Cannonball Run hasn’t moved on too much since we last reported on the relaunch of the film, with potential director Rawson Thurber (We’re The Millers) still not signed on but still seeming very interested.
What has come to light though, is the tone the new version of the film will take. Despite Thurber not yet being signed on, he spoke with /Film about his potential vision for the film:
“I think we’re living in a post or current Fast & Furious world. So I don’t think Cannonball can out-Fast & Furious the Fast and the Furious. That’s its own thing, but we definitely want to harness that with the fun of Ocean’s Eleven and put those together. It’ll have to be a different thing than Fast, but should have some great car action, obviously”.
It shouldn’t be very surprising that a car-based film wants to take influence from the most successful car-heavy franchise going right now, and it’ll be interesting to see if the film can capture the combination it wants. Fast Five arguably blended its franchise with Ocean’s Eleven back in 2011.
It still seems up in the air whether The Cannonball Run reboot will get off the ground, considering a potential reboot has been on the cards for years. Thurber is busy nonetheless, directing Dwayne Johnson in Skyscraper, which arrives in cinemas July 13, 2018.
