Seth Rogen and writing pal Evan Goldberg are teaming up with Amazon once again. With the ongoing success of Preacher, it’s no surprise to hear that the duo will be adapting another graphic novel for the streaming service: Garth Ennis‘ dark, anti-superhero The Boys.
The comic series focuses on “a world where superheroes exist; however, most of the superheroes in the series’ universe are corrupted by their celebrity status and often engage in reckless behaviour, compromising the safety of the world. For this reason, a superpowered CIA squad, known informally as ‘The Boys’, is charged with monitoring the superhero community”.
Ennis is also the creator behind Preacher, so this is a natural match for Rogen and Goldberg whose Preacher adaptation hasn’t skimped out on the darker and seedier aspects of the source material. Hollywood has been attempting to adapt The Boys for a while now, with Adam McKay at one point attached to the project before it fell through.
Unsurprisingly, with comic book adaptations arguably the hottest property in Hollywood right now, The Boys looks a far more intriguing, and less risky, prospect for producers than it may have looked in the past.
In contrast to their streaming rival Netflix, Amazon is reportedly cutting down on the amount of new shows they produce this year to keep costs down, in favour of developing less content and focusing on creating a few prestige shows. Could The Boys be that show?
