Production on director Harmony Korine‘s first feature since 2013’s Spring Breakers is set to kick off soon, and the film has made an excellent addition to its cast. Isla Fisher will join the film, titled Beach Bum, and will play the wife of Matthew McConaughey in the stoner-comedy.
McConaughey will play Moondog, a rebellious and lovable rouge (sound familiar?) who lives life large, alongside Snoop Dogg, who together play a pair of “somewhat depressive marijuana smokers, in the spirit of Cheech and Chong”.
Upon initially casting McConaughey, Korine said the film will be a “wild, audacious ride, and I can’t think of anyone better than Matthew McConaughey to play our hero Moondog, a rebellious charmer in this fast-paced, uplifting and irreverent comedy”. Korine also hopes the film takes advantage of the larger legality of Marijuana in the States, with a very unusual idea:
“I would very much like to have the film, when it’s released, be shown in rooms that spread curls of marijuana [smoke]. It is possible in some states, such as California, that have legalised this drug for [medical use]. We already have thirty rooms that have accepted”.
With that statement, I doubt Korine is aiming for a wide release in chain cinemas, but he’s just dedicated enough to strange requests that there’s a chance he could at least pull off a few screenings of Beach Bum in its preferred environment.
At least we know, whether getting to watch the film in a haze of marijuana smoke or not, that a great cast has come together and the film sounds good. Every Korine release should be met with morbid intrigue as to what strange goings on might occur, and Beach Bum seems no different, and sounds like a far less intense outing than his most recent work.
