Jennifer Lawrence, one of the biggest stars in the world, is set to team up with one of the most-talked about directors of the current awards season. Variety reports that Luca Guadagnino, currently getting a lot of buzz for the wonderful Call Me By Your Name, will direct Lawrence in a drama titled Burial Rites.
The film will be a period drama that takes place in 1830s Iceland and follows a woman who is set to be publicly executed. The adaptation will draw from Hannah Kent‘s 2013 novel of the same name and will centre around Agnes Magnusdottir, who was sentenced to death for killing two men and setting fire to their home.
The story takes place as Agnes awaits confirmation of her death sentence by the high court, forcing her to reflect on her life, her supposed crime and reluctantly form emotional bonds as she stares death in the face. Agnes was a real person, and was previously the basis for the 1995 Icelandic film, Agnes.
Which all sounds very exciting and interesting. There’s no doubt that Burial Rites will likely be a major awards player when it hits cinemas, though it actually won’t be the next film from either Lawrence or Guadagnino.
The latter has recently wrapped production on his remake of horror classic Suspiria, which should arrive next year, while Lawrence will return in 2018 with spy thriller Red Sparrow and also reprise her role as Mystique in X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
