Tom Cruise posted a photo from the first day of shooting the Top Gun sequel last week to spark some excitement, but curiously there was no news on whether Iceman would be in the sequel. But per The Wrap, Val Kilmer will indeed reprise his role, and the rivalry between Maverick and Iceman will continue into the sequel.
The film is titled Top Gun: Maverick, and years ago when the follow-up was still in development, original director Tony Scott was intending to direct. After his untimely passing, Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer were still passionate about getting the sequel off the ground, and brought on board Cruise’s Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski to helm the film.
Eric Warren Singer (Only The Brave), Peter Craig (The Town), and Justin Marks (Counterpart) have penned the script for the film, which is said to be tackling issues related to drone warfare.
Until this news, there was in fact no other confirmed casting apart from Cruise, so Kilmer is the first additional name to join the cast, and it will probably be his first major role in a while, having been resigned to smaller supporting roles over the past decade because of health issues.
More news regarding Top Gun: Maverick will likely surface soon, and we should get a better idea of what the sequel will be about. The film is currently scheduled to hit cinemas on July 12, 2019.
