Following her award-winning role in the critically acclaimed Mudbound, Mary J. Blige has signed on to star in the horror/thriller Body Cam, which is being put together at Paramount. The film is being described as a blend of Jordan Peele‘s Get Out and David Ayer‘s End Of Watch.
It will follow a group of LAPD officers who become haunted by a malevolent spirit tied to the murder of a black teenager at the hands of two white officers, an incident that was caught on body camera footage and subsequently destroyed in the hopes of covering it up.
Blige is in line to play an officer that becomes haunted by the visions and begins to investigate the cover-up. The spec script was penned by Richmond Riedel (Shooter) and rewritten by Nic McCarthy and John Ridley (12 Years A Slave), while the film is set to be directed by Malik Vitthal, who helmed the 2014 Netflix drama Imperial Dreams, which starred John Boyega.
It’s another interesting role for Blige, whose Oscar nomination has already propelled her to a role in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of the comic The Umbrella Academy. That is set to debut sometime later this year, and combined with this role in Body Cam, which looks to be a timely film, Blige’s acting career is looking pretty rosy right now.
