2002’s Lilo & Stitch isn’t officially a part of the second golden age of Disney Animation – the era that the studio is currently giving live-action remakes to – but it will be getting the live-action treatment anyway. THR reports that the studio is looking for a live-action/CGI reboot of the film, with Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich set to produce with Mike Van Waes penning the screenplay.
Lin and Eirich have already guided the upcoming Aladdin remake into production, while Van Waes mostly has a background in horror. He wrote the upcoming Conjuring spinoff The Crooked Man, while also penning the Wizard Of Oz-inspired horror film Not In Kansas.
The original Lilo & Stitch follows Experiment 626, who escapes from galactic imprisonment and crash lands on the island of Kaua’i, where he befriends a young girl named Lilo, who affectionately names him Stitch.
The recent live-action remakes have been huge for Disney, so much so that not every one from now on will get a traditional theatrical release. The live-action Lady & The Tramp will premiere on Disney’s upcoming streaming platform. It’s unknown yet whether the Lilo & Stitch remake will be a theatrical release or land on the streaming service.
Lin and Eirich’s Aladdin, directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, Will Smith, and Marwan Kenzari, will hit cinemas May 24, 2019.
