Anderson .Paak‘s super quick follow-up to his Oxnard album is only just a week away! As we brace ourselves for Ventura, the talented California artist has teased us with some more music. Giving us the last single “King James” only a month ago, we get new single “Make It Better” with the legendary Smokey Robinson.
The soulful track, produced by Alchemist and Fredwreck, finds .Paak in his element. It’s beautifully constructed, with a funk bassline and a breezy feel with the addition of strings. Paak channels his inner Al Green and Marvin Gaye vibes, so it’s no surprise Smokey Robinson assists on the track.
“Make It Better” is accompanied by a music video directed by Andy Hines. In the romantic clip, Anderson .Paak portrays the highs and lows of being in love. Just like any relationship, there’s the warm infatuation but also the bitter hostility. The cuddles and the arguments. Sometimes you break up and then you make up. That’s the essence of the single.
Speaking to Zane Lowe on Beats 1, .Paak opened up about co-writing the song with Robinson. “He’s still got it. He came through. He said, ‘You gotta make it nice, baby. You gotta say something sweet to her, baby. If you want her to fall in love, you gotta make love to her with your words, man,’” he said.
Ventura, the follow-up to November’s Oxnard, arrives April 12. Executive produced by Dr. Dre, the album also features André 3000, Jazmine Sullivan, Brandy, Nate Dogg and Lalah Hathaway.
