The filmmakers behind one of Netflix’s 2018 romcom hits are teaming up once again. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before cinematographer – and director of the upcoming sequel – Michael Fimognari will direct an adaptation of Lauren Oliver‘s bestselling YA novel, Replica.
The story follows Gemma, stuck visiting her workaholic father in coastal Florida. There, she reconnects with her childhood crush Jake. One day, things drastically change when they witness an explosion in the marshes. When a desperate girl climbs aboard their boat who looks exactly like Gemma and claims to be a Replica from the Haven Institute, Gemma and Jake are pulled into a conspiracy beyond their imagination.
Producer Matt Kaplan and his ACE Entertainment banner – also behind To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before – will produce. Oliver previously worked with Kaplan on another adaptation of her work, Before I Fall, in which she also wrote the screenplay.
Kaplan said in a statement: “Lauren’s beautiful coming of age story about what it means to be human resonated with YA audiences across the globe, and blending this narrative with Michael’s experience in the genre space is exactly what we want to be doing at ACE. We are excited to explore the ideas and themes that young people relate to and I can’t think of better people to tell this story with”.
Oliver is currently working with Amazon Studios on a series adaptation of her novel, Panic. She is serving as both writer and producer. Fimognari will be making his directorial debut with To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before 2. However he is known as a talented cinematographer, most recently shooting the Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep.
Replica is expected to begin production in early 2020.
