Kylie Minogue’s spectacular performance at this year’s Glastonbury has become the most-watched moment in the festival’s history. The singer has beat the record previously held by Ed Sheeran and Adele.
Kylie played Glastonbury’s ‘Legend’s Slot’ this year, marking her return to the legendary festival after she joined Scissor Sisters on stage in 2010. Earlier in 2005, the Australian pop icon was forced to pull out of the setlist due to a breast cancer diagnosis.
Kylie’s career-spanning performance at Glastonbury 2019 was watched on average by 3.2 million people. Viewership peaked at 3.9 million during the final moments of the set, when Kylie played her last year’s hit “Dancing” and closed with 2000’s classic “Spinning Around”.
During her record-breaking performance at Worthy Farm, the pop star was accompanied by some special guests. She played an acoustic version of “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” with Coldplay’s Chris Martin and was joined by Nick Cave for their collaboration “Where The Wild Roses Grow”.
It was an emotional moment for Kylie, who was slated to perform at Glasto fourteen years ago, but eventually had to pull out because of a breast cancer diagnosis. “In 2005, I was meant to be here”, she remained viewers from stage. “Circumstances meant that I did not make it”.
The performance, which was later broadcast on BBC One, became Glastonbury’s most watched ever, breaking the record set by Ed Sheeran in 2017. His headline slot attracted an average audience of 3.1m. One year earlier, Adele’s Pyramid Stage performance was watched by roughly 2m people.
