Fede Álvarez has signed a first-look deal with Legendary Pictures, and his first announcement as a part of that deal is a horror film set in the White House. Cue the jokes about the White House currently being scary enough.
The deal with Legendary was made between Legendary and Bad Hombre, Alvarez’s production company with partner Rodolfo Sayagues. The duo recently appointed Fear The Walking Dead writer and co-executive producer Shintaro Shimosawa as head of production. Multiple projects are in the works, including a Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot.
Reboots of famous horror movies are a dime-a-dozen, but unfortunately there’s not much else to tell about that White House horror movie. It’s being compared to The Shining but set in the famous building, and it stems from a script penned by Joe Epstein, who once had a script appear on the Hollywood Black List. As did Chris Thomas Devlin, who’s writing the Texas Chainsaw reboot.
It will be interesting to see if the White House-set movie is distinctly political or just uses the building as a haunted house of sorts. Álvarez previously directed Don’t Breathe, a very effective horror film revolving around a group breaking into a blind man’s house. His last film was The Girl In The Spider’s Web. Whatever this movie turns out to be, it should be worth seeing for his involvement alone.
