Just two weeks ago it was announced that David Bruckner (The Night House) would be directing a Hellraiser reimagining for Spyglass. Maybe that announcement sparked an idea in someone, as now a second Hellraiser project is in development, except this one is for TV.
HBO are developing a Hellraiser series with eclectic director David Gordon Green at the helm. Green has directed 2018’s Halloween, impressive indie dramas and wacky comedies, but has also previously worked with the network on various Danny McBride-related shows.
The series comes from Michael Dougherty (Trick r’ Treat, Godzilla: King Of The Monsters) and Mark Verheiden (Battlestar Galactica, Heroes), two men known for their love of genre.
Their take on the material is reportedly not a remake but rather a continuation, extending the story of the Cenobites under ruler Pinhead ravaging humanity with a desire to balance good with pure evil.
It will be interesting to see how Hellraiser is adapted for TV. Will it have a long-running, season-long story, and it can it sustain that? Or will it be more like those X-Files monster of the week episodes, maybe with different characters? We’ll see. Dougherty and Verheiden have some impressive genre credits to their name, and with Green behind the camera, this could be something really interesting.
