British actor Rafe Spall will embody the Atticus Finch role in the play To Kill A Mockingbird for its London West End premiere next year. Spall replaces Rhys Ifans in the lead role of the production. An initial opening date this June has had to be moved back, owing to industry uncertainty surrounding covid-19.
The play, which opens on March 10, 2022 in the Gielgud Theatre, was written by West Wing creator, Aaron Sorkin and based on the Harper Lee book from 1960.
The play began its tour on Broadway in 2018 and even played in front of 18,000 students at the famous Madison Square Garden, but had to stop its run suddenly due to the pandemic.
The play is about a court case in the 1930s in Alabama through a child’s eyes. Rafe Spall will play a lawyer who represents and defends Tom Robinson, a black man who has been accused of rape.
The choice to use the 38-year old actor Rafe Pall has been a masterstroke, as he recently starred in Just Mercy as a young Alabama district attorney. Moreover, he can be considered as a very talented actor, both on the stage and on the big screen.
