“A journey fraught with peril and tension” could well describe the plot of 20,ooo Leagues Under the Sea, Brian Singer‘s next directorial feature. However, it could more accurately be used to describe the development hell the project has gone through. Based on Jules Verne‘s classic science-fiction adventure of the same name, the adaptation was originally attached to David Fincher for Disney. After casting issues the film was abandoned; resurfaced with McG in the director spot, and sank to the depths once more.

The novel follows French marine biologist, Professor Aronnax, on an expedition to find a much maligned sea creature sighted around the world. Set in 1866, the expedition is captured upon the Pacific Ocean by the enigmatic Captain Nemo, and his magnificent mechanical submarine; the Nautilus. Mistaken for a monster, the vessel has plundered the oceans, with a raging Nemo at the helm. An intellectual outcast, the exiled captain is both product and enemy of the imperialism and the British Empire. With Bryan Singer at the ship’s wheel, let’s hope this project is the one to stay afloat. Singer’s next film, X-Men: Apocalypse will be released May 19, 2016.
