Earlier this year, many were up in arms because Rachel Dolezal, someone with Caucasian roots, said that she was black. Dolezal was president of her local NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People) chapter before the scandal arose and holds a strong passion for black-related issues.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Rihanna praises Dolezal: “Is it such a horrible thing that she pretended to be black? Black is a great thing, and I think she legit changed people’s perspective a bit and woke people up”. What Rihanna considers inoffensive, many say that it takes away from the lived experiences of people who are actually black. The Vanity Fair magazine which includes Rihanna’s interview will be out on October 13.
