Alyssa Milano, is perhaps best known for bringing her warmth and wit to the wonder that was the girl-power show Charmed. Phoebe Halliwell, was one badass witch who spoke her mind and wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. She was one of my biggest idols, and inspirations growing up – and I can’t imagine anyone but Milano playing her.
But, if Milano had attained another, more famous (and iconic) role a few years earlier. Phoebe, as we know her now, would probably not have existed. While talking with HuffPost Live on Wednesday, Milano revealed that she almost won the part of Lydia in cult classic Beetlejuice. The role, as we all know, eventually went to Winona Ryder. “It was between the two of us, and she actually got the part,” Milano disclosed.
But, just think. What if. What would Milano’s career look like today? It’s an interesting and fun thought process, and Milano agrees. “You always wonder what would have happened differently in my life had that worked out, not that I would want it to be any different, but it’s just an interesting thought game”.
It’s hard imagining anyone but Ryder as the moody and gothic Lydia. But it’s fun to imagine what might have been. Milano had already made a name for herself on the sitcom Who’s the Boss? – which had catapulted her to teen idol status. So it’s possible that Tim Burton wanted to go with someone a little less known. Regardless, Milano has had a fruitful career and she gave us the great Phoebe Halliwell. She should be more than proud.
