Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Claire Foy & Jamie Bell Join Andrew Haigh’s ‘Strangers’

Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Claire Foy, and Jamie Bell have all signed on to join the cast of Strangers, the latest film by acclaimed director Andrew Haigh (Weekend, Lean On Pete). The film is loosely based on Taichi Yamada‘s novel, which Haigh will adapt himself.

Strangers follows screenwriter Adam who, one night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, has a chance encounter with his mysterious neighbor Harry that punctures the rhythm of his everyday life.

As Adam and Harry get closer, Adam is pulled back to his childhood home where he discovers that his long-dead parents are both living and look the same age as the day they died over 30 years ago.

Scott will play Adam, Mescal will play Harry, with Foy and Bell playing Adam’s parents. Blueprint Pictures, Searchlight Pictures, and Film4 will produce the film.

Haigh is best known for his grounded dramas like Weekend, 45 Years, and Lean On Pete. He also co-created and co-produced LGBTQ+ HBO drama Looking, which ran for two seasons and concluded with the Haigh-directed movie in 2016.

Strangers will mark Haigh’s return to film after jumping back to TV for his last few projects. In 2019 he directed episodes of Netflix sci-fi series The OA, before last year writing and directing the entirety of the five-part BBC miniseries The North Water, which starred Colin Farrell and Jack O’Connell.

Scott broke out thanks to his roles in Sherlock and Fleabag, while also landing a role in Sam Mendes1917. He’ll next be seen in Lena Dunham‘s Catherine, Called Birdy. Mescal is now widely known for starring in the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney‘s Normal People, and has since appeared in Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s The Lost Daughter and just wrapped the Carmen reboot.

Foy is probably best known for starring in Netflix’s The Crown, and has also appeared in films such as First Man and Unsane. She’ll next be seen in Sarah Polley‘s Women Talking as a part of a stacked cast that also includes Frances McDormand, Rooney Mara, Jessie Buckley, and Ben Whishaw.

Bell had a key role in Rocketman a few years ago, and was recently seen in actioner Without Remorse. He’s currently in post-production on drama Surrounded, which stars Letitia Wright and will also feature one of the final performances of Michael K. Williams.
