In this episode we have Archer (H. Jon Benjamin), Cyril (Chris Parnell), and Ray (Adam Reed) have been captured by “La Madrina” who was in fact an undercover cop. They are being driven to “La Culebra” which is probably inspired by or another name for “La Modelo”, a prison in Bogota, Colombia where the 11000 inmates have easy access to guns and explosives. A wayward cow proves to be their salvation however, and after a rather nasty car-crash they dust themselves off and try to make their way towards the Promised Land of the United States.
This episode proved to be far better than the previous two as it had less going on and more time to breathe and craft a joke. The scene where they’re on the raft is a good example of this: Archer talks extensively about his fear of crocodiles, alligators, and caimans which is the set-up for the joke when the two injured guards are eaten by them. His fears aren’t unfounded it seems.
The highlight of the episode is the logical extreme of one of the running gags of the series: Archer’s answerphone. In this one, the whole room turns into a nightclub with Archer being sampled into a musical beat. The fact that Cheryl/Carol (Judy Greer) and Pam (Amber Nash) had whistles and glow-sticks with them, I found quite cute, on a surrealist level of course. A return to form for the show after those two rather flat episodes, but can the quality be maintained? Archer is available on Netflix.
