Cameron Diaz, who stepped away from Hollywood in 2018, is coming out of retirement to star in a new action-comedy at Netflix alongside Jamie Foxx.
The film will aptly be titled Back In Action, and will mark the third time Diaz and Foxx have collaborated, having previously worked together in 1999’s Any Given Sunday and the 2014 Annie remake, Diaz’s most recent role.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but we do know that Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) is directing from a script he co-wrote alongside Brendan O’Brien (Bad Neighbours). Beau Bauman (Central Intelligence) will produce, while Foxx will executive produce the film with O’Brien, Datari Turner, and Mark McNair.
Diaz got her big break in the 1994 Jim Carrey comedy The Mask before going on to become a bankable star thanks to films like There’s Something About Mary, Vanilla Sky, Gangs Of New York, and the Shrek series.
As mentioned, her last on screen role was 2014’s Annie, though she has appeared as herself on The Drew Barrymore Show and RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars since. Apart from those appearances, she’s mostly kept a low profile.
Foxx already has a good working relationship with Netflix, having previously starred in 2020 sci-fi actioner Project Power and currently working on sci-fi comedy They Cloned Tyrone. Away from the streamer, he’s also in production on All-Star Weekend, a sports dramedy he’s co-written, directing, and starring in.
Netflix haven’t given any details about when Back In Action will be released, but production is expected to begin later this year.
