‘Captain Marvel 2’ Hires ‘WandaVision’ Writer & Searches For New Director | Film News

Captain Marvel, released last year, quickly became one of Marvel’s highest grossing films. Pretty impressive considering the film was introducing a new character this deep into the Infinity Saga. Naturally, a sequel is expected, but when Marvel announced their Phase Four plans, Captain Marvel was nowhere to be found.

No one was truly fretting, but there’s even less reason to do so now. 2020 and 2021 will cover Phase Four, and the Captain Marvel sequel is expected to arrive sometime in 2022. On top of that, Marvel is looking to hire Megan McDonnell to pen the script. She was a staff writer on the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision, so the studio must be pretty confident in her work on that show.

McDonnell likely won’t be the only writer hired, only because these MCU films usually have a gaggle of people working on the script. The first Captain Marvel film, for example, had six credited writers.

What’s also being reported is that Marvel is searching for a new female director to take the reigns from Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The duo are reportedly aiming to stay in the MCU and may helm a Disney+ Marvel series. Whoever takes over from them will have to tackle a new phase Carol Danvers’ life, as the sequel will be set in the present day. The first film took place in the 90s.

A lot of the announced MCU films – Black Widow, Eternals, Shang-Chi – are either prequels or the introduction of new characters. Very few films in the near future will seemingly deal with the aftermath of Endgame as Kevin Feige and company seek to let that storyline breathe for a bit. Captain Marvel 2 could be one of the first movies to tackle the post-Endgame world.

There are plenty of directors who would want to take on that challenge. We’ll wait and see who Marvel selects.
