Chris Hemsworth hasn’t got time for patriarchal bullshit. He’s all about dismantling prescribed gender roles. In a recent interview with Ellen DeGeneres, he recalled a rather conscious raising moment which involved his four-year-old daughter India requesting a very specific body part. She revealed to her father that she is jealous of the fact that her brothers have penises and she doesn’t.
Hemsworth then ventured into uncharted territory, and attempted to explain to her that there are certain anatomical differences between her and her brothers. But India wasn’t satisfied, having breasts wasn’t going to suffice. She’s a girl that knows what she wants, and she wants a penis.
“She was like, ‘I really want one… I want a penis!'” Hemsworth said. “I was like, she’s 4, you know what, you can be whatever you want to be. And she goes, ‘Thanks dad!’ Runs off to the playground and that was it. So I’ll have to keep that conversation up in a few years’ time”. Perfect, Chris. It’s wonderful that he encourages his children to be whatever they want to be.
He also spoke about his upcoming film The Huntsman: Winter’s War and the importance of exposing his young daughter to strong, ambitious and intelligent female characters, women that are not in need of saving. We all know that Hollywood has a serious representation problem, and Hemsworth spoke about the importance of inclusion and strong female characters, saying that “there’s not enough of it, and there should be more”.
