News regarding Matt Reeves‘ The Batman continues to come at us fast. Just a few weeks after it was announced that Paul Dano was on board to play The Riddler and Zoe Kravitz would play Catwoman (and not too long after Robert Pattinson was cast as the caped crusader himself), Colin Farrell is now reportedly in talks to play The Penguin in the film.
Details regarding the film are still shrouded in secrecy. But what is clear is that this is going to be a multi-villain movie with plenty of moving parts. That’s either a good or bad thing, depending on your view. Some will point to Spider-Man 3 as an example of too many villains muddying the plot. Others could reference The Dark Knight as a film that perfectly balances multiple bad guys.
With reports that Andy Serkis is being courted to play Alfred, The Batman will be loaded with stars. But, don’t count on Farrell’s involvement just yet. Jonah Hill was widely reported to be in advanced talks to play The Riddler (or maybe The Penguin, depending on who you ask). But that fell through, and he was replaced by Dano. So don’t pencil in Farrell quite yet, although it’s looking good.
If he does officially sign on, this wouldn’t be the first time Farrell has played a villain in a superhero movie. He played Bullseye in 2003’s Daredevil. Hopefully his Penguin will have a better look than his laughably bizarre one from that role (look it up).
Farrell is so ubiquitous that he’s almost become underrated as an actor. But he rarely disappoints, and, should he sign on, it will be another coup for a film that’s shaping up to be very exciting. The Batman hits cinemas June 25, 2021.
