Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin‘s I Think You Should Leave has become arguably the defining sketch series of millennials thanks to its hilarious examinations of insecurity, social anxiety, not to mention its incredible meme potential.
So it will be music to the ears of fans to hear that Robinson and Kanin have signed to create a new comedy series for HBO Max titled Computer School.
The show will reportedly follow a recent high school graduate and his uncle, played by Robinson, who find themselves attending the same computer class in suburban Michigan. The show will be a single-camera comedy series written and produced by Robinson and Kanin, while Andrew Gaynord (Stath Lets Flats) will direct the pilot.
The show was previously sold as a pilot for Hulu after a bidding war but, for reasons unknown, the streamer decided not to move forward with it. HBO Max then swooped in and put it into turnaround.
Despite garnering even more critical acclaim with its second season that its first, the status of I Think You Should Leave remains up in the air. Netflix remains quiet about whether a third season will happen, which seems crazy considering the show’s popularity.
But it wouldn’t be the first time Netflix has surprisingly cancelled a popular show, as American Vandal and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina can attest to. Hulu’s decision to not move forward with Computer School also seems to hint that Robinson and Kanin’s comedy perhaps doesn’t resonate with an older generation of executives as it does with its younger fans.
Obviously Computer School will be a different show to I Think You Should Leave, and it will be interesting to see how Robinson and Kanin’s humour works in a traditional single-camera set-up. But the premise still sounds ripe for socially awkward encounters that I Think You Should Leave excels at.
Hopefully more news regarding this new show, and the status of I Think You Should Leave, will arrive soon.
