William Jackson Harper and Cristin Milloti have signed on to star in The Resort, a dark comedy series in the works for Peacock. The duo will play married high school teachers, with Milloti’s character feeling the pains of a humdrum life while Harper’s is happy just where he is. But things heat up for the couple when they get roped into a mystery while on their wedding anniversary.
The show’s official synopsis reads: “A multi-generational, coming-of-age love story disguised as a fast-paced mystery about the disappointment of time. An anniversary trip puts a marriage to the test when the couple finds themselves embroiled in one of the Mayan Riviera’s most bizarre unsolved mysteries that took place fifteen years prior.”
Andy Siara, who penned the screenplay for Palm Springs (which Milloti starred in) will write and executive produce the series. Ben Sinclair, best known for co-creating, directing and starring in HBO show High Maintenance, will direct episodes one through four.
Harper and Milloti have already proven their comedy chops, with Harper best known for his work on The Good Place, with Milloti co-starring alongside Andy Samberg in the aforementioned Palm Springs while also playing a key role in the later seasons of How I Met Your Mother.
Their involvement should make The Resort worth watching, but the interesting mix of love story and mystery might keep viewers around. Peacock also announced a number of actors in supporting roles for the series, including Parvesh Cheena, Nina Bloomgarden, Gabriela Cartol, Skyler Gisondo, Debby Ryan, and Becky Ann Baker.
There’s no word on when The Resort is expected to head into production. Peacock is one of a number of newer streaming platforms looking to stay afloat, and they will be hoping that The Resort can become the kind of popular hit that significantly increases subscribers.
