Dave Franco To Direct Romcom ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ For Amazon

Dave Franco has signed on to direct romantic comedy Somebody That I Used To Know for Amazon Studios. He has written the film alongside his wife Alison Brie, who will also star in the film alongside Jay Ellis and Kiersey Clemons.

The film will follow a workaholic named Ally who takes a trip back to her hometown and runs in to her ex-boyfriend Sean. The two begin to relive stories from their past and Ally begins to contemplate her life choices and the person that she has become. She later meets a younger woman named Cassidy who eerily reminds her of the person she once was.

This will be Franco’s follow up to his directorial debut The Rental, which also starred Brie. The two have also previously collaborated on The Lego Movie, The Disaster Artist, and The Little Hours. Franco said in a statement:

“Alison and I love romantic comedies and were inspired by the classics from the 80’s and 90’s. We couldn’t be more excited about working with Jay and Kiersey, who are both extremely natural performers, capable of bringing levity and drama in equal measure. And we’re so grateful to have partnered with Amazon Studios, who have been incredibly supportive in helping bring this project to life.”

The romantic comedy genre is potentially at the beginning of a mini-revival. George Clooney and Julia Roberts are on board for Ticket To Paradise, Billy Eichner is directing and starring in Bros.

Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum are leading The Lost City Of D, and Pete Davidson and Kaley Cuoco are starring in Meet Cute.

All of those are (currently) scheduled for theatrical releases though, so we’ll see where Somebody That I Used To Know fits in. The movie is expected to arrive sometime in 2022.
