Emily Blunt To Star & Dwayne Johnson To Produce Female Detective Film For Amazon

Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson clearly had a blast working together on Disney’s recently-released Jungle Cruise, as they’ve signed on to collaborate on another project. The duo are teaming up to produce a film about trailblazing female detective Kate Warne, with Blunt starring.

Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions will produce in a co-production with Blunt’s Ledbury Productions and Kristina Sorensen Productions. Gustin Nash (Charlie Bartlett) has penned the script, which will chronicle Warne’s life as the first woman to become a detective for the famous Pinkerton National Detective Agency.

Not much is known about her life prior to joining the agency at just 23, but the project is being described as a propulsive action adventure revolving around her time as essentially the world’s first female Sherlock Holmes, becoming a role model and shining example for the women to follow in her footsteps.

Amazon reportedly acquired the project in a competitive situation, but it’s unknown who else they were competing against. Johnson’s Seven Bucks already have a working relationship with the company, having recently gone into production on Christmas action film Red One, which is expected to arrived in the 2023 holiday season.

Even though Blunt will be the only one in front of the camera, it makes sense that multiple studios and streamers were interested in a Blunt/Johnson collaboration again. Jungle Cruise, even with its simultaneous Disney+ release, still reeled in $34 million on its opening weekend, the highest theatrical release box office numbers in over a year.

That’s good news for Blunt and Johnson’s star power, and also for Disney’s other in-development theme park to film adaptation, The Haunted Mansion, which recently secured LaKeith Stanfield and Tiffany Haddish for starring roles.

Blunt has had a good year with the release of Jungle Cruise and A Quiet Place Part II. Her only other in-development project is limited western series The English, which will hit Amazon and BBC One later this year.

Johnson has Netflix action-thriller Red Notice arriving later this year, which also stars Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. He’s also working on two DC films: re-teaming with Jungle Cruise director Jaume Collet-Serra for Black Adam, while he’ll voice Krypto the Superdog in DC League Of Super-Pets. Both of those are due in 2022.
