Lupita Nyong’o Didn’t Know She Was Auditioning For ‘Star Wars’ | Film News

It’s begun. The embargo on reviews for The Force Awakens has been lifted and social media has become no man’s land for anyone wanting to go into the cinema with no preconceptions. Feeling the pain of you all, here’s a Star Wars piece with zero spoiler material. You’d think with Star Wars being as omnipotent as it is, you would know whether you’d auditioned for it; not Lupita Nyong’o it seems.

The Mexican-Kenyan actress revealed during an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that her Star Wars audition came immediately after her Oscar success with 12 Years a Slave. Consequently she was so busy she couldn’t remember the encounter: “I didn’t really know what I was auditioning for. I guess I thought I should find work, you know? I was so busy, I was working with adrenaline so I went in and out. I barely remember that audition, and then two months later [Abrams] called me.

Nyong’o, 32, plays a diminutive alien called Maz Kanata, who sounds very much like the Yoda of this trilogy (with her wise knowledge about people’s eyes). Nyong’o also revealed in the interview that it took between 45 minutes to 2 and a half hours to fit her into the motion-capture gear required for her role. Lupita Nyong’o stars alongside Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which hits U.K. cinemas tomorrow (internally suppressing minor heart attack).
