Folk Rock Duo Eric Anders And Mark O’Bitz Present New Album ‘Answers Belie’

The folk-rock landscape has just received another evocative piece to its extensive collection. The Bay Area’s celebrated folk-rock duo, Eric Anders and Mark O’Bitz, have unveiled their latest creation, Answers Belie. Released via Baggage Room Records on June 24, 2023, the album marks their 8th full-length project, in addition to an array of EPs and singles.

The album’s title track draws inspiration from the poignant verses of Yeats’s “The Second Coming”. As Eric elucidates, the song delves deep into the ambiguities of life’s questions, casting light on our inner fears and uncertainties. The very answers we fervently cling to often reveal the very anxieties we wish to mask.

The themes explored are diverse, spanning political introspection, philosophical musings, and heartwarming sentiments. A notable highlight, “Slow Movin’ Nightmare” is described by Eric as “a dirge for American democracy.” Meanwhile, “Long Ol’ Civil War” offers a contemporary take on Lincoln’s historic Gettysburg address.

Yet, not all tracks are entrenched in political commentary. “The Hardest Lesson” explores the cyclical nature of dysfunctional relationships, reminiscent of themes from Eric’s earlier albums.

In a more personal tune, “Eyes, A Child, Bedside” is a touching tribute to Eric’s maternal grandfather – a testament to the healthcare struggles faced by those dedicated to public service. The concluding song, “I Hope Time Will Be Kind,” taps into universal emotions: the inevitable aging process and the anxieties concerning the future our children will inherit.

Produced by Mike Butler and featuring an ensemble of talented musicians, this release echoes the duo’s signature Americana-indie-singer-songwriter sound, marking a return to their roots after exploring a more rock-driven style in 2022’s releases.

Eric and Mark have a longstanding legacy in the music world, with accolades such as their climate change single, “Searise”, and their concept album inspired by George Saunders’ novel, American Bardo – listed among Popmatters’ top Americana albums of 2020.

Having started their musical journey in the early 2000s, their collaboration has borne fruit in the form of critically acclaimed albums and tracks featured in TV shows and films. The revamped Anders Obitz website offers a consolidated experience for fans, featuring curated playlists that reflect the duo’s rich discography.

With Answers Belie, Eric Anders and Mark O’Bitz provide listeners with a thought-provoking journey, navigating the myriad of challenges and emotions that define our modern era. Listen to the project below.
