George Miller Reportedly Considering Anya Taylor-Joy For Lead In ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Spinoff ‘Furiosa’ | Film News
While everyone in real life is considering what a post-apocalyptic future might look like, George Miller is already working on a spinoff to his. 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road came out of nowhere to be immediately crowned one of the best action films of all time. Naturally, people want more.
But considering it took Miller over 25 years to get that quasi-sequel made, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that his follow-up is taking its time. Except the Fury Road sequel that was rumoured doesn’t seem to be happening any more. Instead, Miller is reportedly working on a prequel following Furiosa, the breakout character from Fury Road.
She was played by Charlize Theron in that movie. But, this being a prequel, Miller is searching for a younger actress to take on the role, and he’s reportedly found one. Miller recently screen-tested Thoroughbreds, Split and New Mutants star Anya Taylor-Joy – via Skype, of course – for the Furiosa role.
Taylor-Joy is a great actress and would be a good choice if she does indeed get the role. She’s shown exceptional range in her brief career thus far, and while Theron absolutely nailed the Furiosa role in just one performance and made it hard to envision anyone else playing her, Taylor-Joy has the ability to make it her own.
Unfortunately we know very little about the film itself. Miller is reportedly preparing for a 2021 shoot though, which sounds optimistic for various reasons. You’d think the most obvious one would be the coronavirus pandemic, but Miller has repeatedly been “preparing” to shoot a film for years – even going back to prior to 2015 – only to have it fall away. That we got Fury Road was a mini miracle in and of itself.
We’ll wait for more news regarding the prequel/spinoff. Pretty much everything is in hold right now, so Miller has plenty of time to hash out the story details and ideas for cast and crew. One thing’s for sure, if he ever does make anything Fury Road-adjacent – be it a sequel, prequel, spinoff, or whatever – there will be hoards of people clamouring to see it.
