Guillermo Del Toro To Direct ‘Zanbato’ For Bad Robot & Paramount | Film News

Since his Best Director win at the Oscars last year for The Shape Of Water, Guillermo Del Toro has been laying low. Despite some producing projects in the pipeline, and a bit of animated work, we haven’t heard much about his next feature film. That is, until now. Collider reports that he has signed on to write and direct Zanbato for Bad Robot and Paramount.

Plot details are, of course, currently under wraps. However, sources say that the film follows a young girl aged between 10 and 15 with lethal fighting skills. It’s reportedly a project Del Toro has been working on for years but has never been able to get made. Making a film that wins multiple Oscars usually helps in that regard.

Zanbato being partly produced by J.J. Abrams at Bad Robot also adds another layer of intrigue to the film. Del Toro does have multiple projects in the works at various stages, so there’s no guarantee Zanbato is in fact his next film, but it seems very likely.

The next projects he is involved in are, as mentioned, producing credits; Scott Cooper‘s Antlers at Fox Searchlight and Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark at CBS Films. He’s also an executive producer on Amazon’s upcoming series Carnival Row, which stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne. Abrams is in post-production on this small film currently titled Star Wars: Episode IX.
