Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. Margot Robbie‘s titular anti-hero, arguably the only good thing to come out of Suicide Squad, returns for the spinoff, which sees her on a new adventure teaming up with Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Gotham City detective Renee Montoya.
Played respectively by Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ella Jay Basco and Rosie Perez, the new ragtag group must team up to take down Chris Messina‘s Victor Zsasz and, most importantly, Ewan McGregor as Black Mask.
The trailer is very Quinn-centric, which isn’t a problem considering she’s the breakout character and her name’s in the title. Expect another trailer introducing us to the other members of the crew, and it will be interesting to see if the actual film is more of an ensemble in practice or if the rest of the group are in smaller supporting roles.
The film looks to have a stronger visual palette than Suicide Squad, along with a better sense of levity. Remember, at the time of that film DC was still all-in on their dark, brooding DCEU, and only tried to make that film funnier in post. It showed. There’s a bigger sense of gleeful fun now that the films aren’t forced to be tied together. McGregor especially looks like he’s having a ball in a villainous role.
Cathy Yan directs just her second feature from a Christina Hodson script. With this and James Gunn‘s upcoming The Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. is essentially throwing the 2016 Suicide Squad in an open grave and frantically covering it up with soil. A good decision. Birds Of Prey – complete with its mouthful title – opens on February 7, 2020.
