Hulu, home of the magnificently successful The Handmaid’s Tale, will now house a series based on the life of Supermodel of the world, RuPaul. J.J. Abrams will executive produce under his Bad Robot banner, alongside RuPaul himself. Gary Lennon (Power) also produces, penning the show’s script too. As usual, RuPaul finds collaboration in World of Wonder.
Currently titled Queen, the series will detail RuPaul’s rise to LGBT icon, from his punk roots in 1980s New York, to the release of dance track “Supermodel (You Better Work)”, to hosting the growingly popular RuPaul’s Drag Race. The fictionalised account is another step towards defying RuPaul’s famous comment that drag “will never be mainstream“, a fact that his Emmy for Outstanding Reality Host also disobeys.
With the project only just being picked up, there’s plenty of time before we’ll see the series materialise. The ninth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race recently ended, seeing the next of America’s Next Drag Superstars being crowned. Season 2-9 are available now on Netflix. See what RuPaul’s all about.
