Despite having high expectations, it seems the future of ITV’s Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands could be on the line after receiving a mixed reception from viewers. Based on an old English poem, the epic series was originally signed up for five years, with star Ed Speleers (Slean) previously saying: “I hope this goes on for years and years – and that this is just the beginning”.
The Sun previously reported that the series was confirmed to be axed, mostly due to its high £17 million budget and disappointing response. However, an ITV spokesman has revealed no decision has been finalised: “It’s standard practice for ITV to decide upon recommission of a series once it’s fully aired. Consequently, we’ve no decision currently about Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands.“
