Jerry Seinfeld To Direct & Star In Netflix Movie About Invention Of Pop Tarts

We knew Jerry Seinfeld‘s overall deal with Netflix included a variety of projects, but did anyone expect it to include a film about the invention of pop tarts? But that’s exactly what’s in the works. Seinfeld will direct and star in Unfrosted for the streaming giant, his first credited film role since 2007’s Bee Movie.

Seinfeld has also co-written the script with Spike Feresten and Barry Marder. The film is inspired by a Pop Tart joke that the comedian unpacked for the New York Times in the video below:

“Stuck at home watching endless sad faces on TV I thought this would be a good time to make something based on pure silliness. So we took my Pop-Tart stand-up bit from my last Netflix special and exploded it into a giant, crazy comedy movie”, Seinfeld told Deadline.

Seinfeld has always been a TV and stand-up guy, rarely appearing in movies, except for fascinating 2002 documentary Comedian and the aforementioned Bee Movie, which is a bizarre – but quite good – animated film that has since become one of the most recognisable memes on the internet. It will be interesting to see whether this live-action film about pop tarts has similar cultural appeal.

This timing is pretty good for Netflix, as Seinfeld – the show – is set to debut on the streamer sometime later this year after they paid hundreds of millions of dollars for the rights. Back in 2017, Seinfeld himself signed a lucrative deal to move his series Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee to Netflix, and also make two stand-up specials.

Seinfeld starring in a live-action comedy is unique in and of itself; the fact that it’s about the invention of pop tarts just makes this even more of a curious project. Seinfeld fans, Bee Movie aficionados, and meme connoisseurs should all be curious about this one.
