John Boyega has signed on to star in thriller The Test, adapted from Sylvain Neuvel‘s novella of the same name and directed by Gavin Hood (Eye In The Sky).
Boyega will star as a behavioural psychologist who administers the titular test – designed to evaluate potential citizens in a fascist near-future state – to Payman Maadi (6 Underground), a mild-mannered would-be immigrant.
However, the test is upended by a far-right terrorist group, and the two must then band together to stop these malevolent forces. Hood describes the film as “a heart-pounding psychological thriller, set in an authoritarian near-future that grabbed me by the throat and left me reeling”, and it sounds pretty relevant to the real world.
Not only because of the far-right terrorist group, but because judging by reports, the film may be pretty self-contained and many scenes may only include Boyega and Maadi, which makes it a practical shoot within the current pandemic. There’s less chance of production shutting down if there’s less people on set.
Entertainment One are funding the film, and it will be produced by Erwin Stoff (The Call Of The Wild). Now that his Star Wars experience is over, Boyega will be looking to stretch his acting muscles in other genres, and The Test sounds like the perfect opportunity to do so.
