Kevin Feige Says ‘Black Panther’ Sequel Needs Ryan Coogler Involved | Film News

All the MCU talk has naturally shifted to the imminent Avengers: Infinity War, which is poised to shatter box office records worldwide. But few would have expected that this mega superhero team-up would arrive just months after Black Panther became Marvel’s highest grossing domestic release ever.

So while the world is waiting for T’Challa and co. to appear in Infinity War, there has also been movement on the standalone Black Panther sequel. Much of the success of this year’s film was down to the creative vision of director Ryan Coogler, and thankfully it sounds as if Marvel is going to do everything they can to get him back to helm the sequel.

Collider spoke to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige at the press day for Avengers: Infinity War, and while Feige confirmed Coogler returning is not yet a done deal, a reunion sounds likely:

“We definitely want Ryan to come back and that’s actively being worked out right now. When will it be? A lot of it will be when Ryan wants to and not rushing anything, but I think we have an idea of when it will be”.

It’s a good sign that Marvel sounds like they’re happy to wait a few years longer for the Black Panther sequel if it means allowing Coogler to finish up other projects and get him back on board. The studio has been criticised for blunting the creative vision of its directors in the past, but that wasn’t the case with Coogler and getting him back is a no-brainer.

Usually, Marvel has moved onto the sequel of a superhero franchise without the original director if the schedule didn’t line up, as was the case with Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Solider, so this is a great sign of respect for the success Coogler achieved.

So, while it might take a little longer for the Black Panther sequel to eventually arrive, it will be worth the wait to have the same creative team behind the project. Feige stated that the studio won’t be announcing any more movies until after Avengers 4, so it’s unknown yet when the sequel is scheduled to approximately arrive.
