Filmmaker Kevin Smith is teaming up with Netflix to revive the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series.
The new anime-style series is called Masters of the Universe: Revelation, and will focus on some of the unresolved storylines of the classic ‘80s show, which revolved around the conflict between He-Man, aka “the most powerful man in the universe”, and the evil sorcerer Skeletor on the planet Eternia.
Smith will serve as the showrunner and executive producer.
“I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe”, Smith said.
“In ‘Revelation’, we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor! Brought to life with the most metal character designs Powerhouse Animation can contain in the frame, this is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!”
The He-Man franchise made its debut in 1982 with a range of Mattel toys and was turned into an animated TV show in 1983, running for two seasons.
A feature length film followed in 1987, starring Rocky actor Dolph Lundgren.
The film was a critical and commercial flop but later became a cult classic, leading to last year’s Netflix spin-off She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and a live action remake of Masters of the Universe, due for release in 2021.
