Kit Harington Is ‘Doctor Faustus’ In New Play | Arts
Hotshot theatre director Jamie Lloyd has secured a star-booking to lead his new production of Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus, in the form of Game of Thrones heart-throb Kit Harington. The production opens at London’s Duke Of York’s Theatre on April 9, and will mark Harrington’s return to the stage after he last performed in the West End – way back in 2008, when he starred in War Horse.
Doctor Faustus is a dream part that I think Kit will really sink his teeth into. As a scholar who wants to expand his knowledge by practising magic, Faustus conjures up a devil named Mephistophilis, who is the servant of Lucifer. Faustus wages a deal with Lucifer whereby he’s willing to exchange his soul for twenty-four years service from Mephistophilis. As you can imagine, this doesn’t bode well for Faustus.
It seems that Harington can’t contain his excitement for his impending role: “(W)hen I read it, I was thrilled. (I)t flips to a contemporary setting and language. It’s a really interesting and unique way of telling a story. I’ve never seen a play done like this. And it’s funny! It’s got everything there – it’s very moving and powerful and strange and wild”.
