Lenny Henry is set to join the cast of ITV’s hit drama Broadchurch in its third series after previously complaining about its lack of mixed and ethnic race characters. The veteran actor, comedian, and writer joined the cast alongside Roy Hudd shooting for the third outing of Broadchurch beginning on Monday.
Henry has been championing TV diversity in recent years, using a Bafta speech two years ago to highlight the lack of BAME – Black, Aisan, and Minority Ethnic – people on screen. His criticism included Broadchurch commenting:
“The evolution of BAME involvement in British TV seems to lurch one step forward and two steps back – a bit like John Sergeant on Strictly Come Dancing, except he had a job at the end of it.”
