Marc Maron In Talks To Join ‘Joker’ Movie | Film News

Marc Maron is the latest name to jump on board Todd Phillips‘ Joker origin story. Having already cast Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz and Robert De Niro, the podcaster and comedian turned acclaimed actor thanks to his role in Netflix’s GLOW will reportedly join the cast as a booking agent on a talk show that plays a part in driving the future clown prince of crime insane.

It’s another interesting piece of casting that doesn’t really signal what this film is going to be. Although it’s been compared to Taxi Driver and The King Of Comedy and been described as “an exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale”, Beetz, De Niro and Maron are all very disparate actors.

Is the film the origin story originally announced? Or is it some kind of weird medley of eccentric actors and performances mashed together? Or something else entirely? It seemed potentially interesting if the film was going to go down the route of being a dark, introspective story – and it still might considering the small budget – but that hasn’t been Phillips’ modus operandi in his career thus far.

Maron’s casting is an intriguing one, and hopefully soon we’ll get a better idea of exactly what this film is going to be. Throwing a spanner in the works is the fact that alongside this is the Jared Leto-led Joker project, which has no relation to this one.

Is this going to get confusing somewhere down the line? Probably. What we do know is that the Phillips/Phoenix Joker movie is set to hit cinemas October 4, 2019.
