Margot Robbie To Star In ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ Prequel

Margot Robbie is reportedly attached to star in an Ocean’s Eleven prequel. Like that film, this project will be a heist caper revolving around con artists who rob hundreds of millions from a casino.

The Variety report stresses that the film is still in development at Warner Bros. and hasn’t yet been officially greenlit. But as it stands, Jay Roach, who previously worked with Robbie on Bombshell, is currently slated to direct, and Carrie Solomon is working on the screenplay, which is expected to take place in 1960s Europe.

This is a curious move since 2018 saw the gender-swapped sequel Ocean’s Eight make almost $300 million worldwide and get positive reviews. So by the looks of it, a follow-up to that film is dead. It also means that a similar title with less numbers will probably be confusing to audiences, so this project may end up with one of those silly prequel titles like Ocean’s: Origins or something.

If the film is given the greenlight to go ahead, there are plans for it to go into production in spring 2023. However, Variety notes that complicating the timeline could be Robbie’s press tour for Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie, which is scheduled to open in July 2023.

There had also been rumours that Steven Soderbergh – who directed the original Ocean’s trilogy – was thinking of returning for a fourth film, but Roach’s involvement looks to have put that to bed. However, there’s a lot up in the air now regarding this project, so plenty of things could change, or it might not even go ahead at all. We’ll see.

In addition to Barbie, Robbie has a number of other notable films in various stages of production, including Damien Chazelle‘s Babylon, David O. Russell‘s Amsterdam, and Wes Anderson‘s Asteroid City.
