Matthew McConaughey To Star In ‘The Rivals Of Amziah King’ From ‘The Vast Of Night’ Director

Matthew McConaughey has signed on to star in crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King, which will be written and directed by Andrew Patterson (The Vast of Night). McConaughey will play the titular role of Amziah King.

Although specific plot details are under wraps, the film is being described as a deeply atmospheric, character-focused crime thriller set against the unique backdrop of remote Oklahoma. Black Bear Pictures is fully financing the film, while Heyday Films are also producing. Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzmann said in a statement:

“Black Bear is thrilled to partner with our friends at Heyday in supporting the bold creation that will be The Rivals of Amziah King. Andrew Patterson‘s visionary filmmaking and Matthew McConaughey‘s extraordinary talent are sure to deliver audiences a truly original and compelling film.”

Heyday’s David Heyman added: “When I first watched The Vast of Night it was clear me that Andrew Patterson was a remarkable talent with a singular vision. I am incredibly excited to be working with Andrew and to support him and Matthew as they bring Amziah to life and make what I believe will be an extraordinary film.”

Patterson’s The Vast of Night was a brilliant debut – a deeply atmospheric small town sci-fi story. It was the sort of debut that gets people’s attention, so it’s no surprise that he’s landed a big star like McConaughey for his follow-up project.

McConaughey recently reprised his voice role as Buster Moon in animated film Sing 2 and voiced Elvis Presley in Netflix series Agent Elvis. This will be his first on-screen film role since 2019’s The Gentlemen.

There’s no word yet on when The Rivals of Amziah King will begin filming.
