Netflix Picks Up John David Washington Thriller ‘Born To Be Murdered’ | Film News

Netflix is very much in the John David Washington business. Having acquired his upcoming romantic drama Malcolm & Marie a month and a half ago, they’ve now picked up another project with the Tenet star involved. This one’s a thriller titled Born To Be Murdered, which is being planned for a 2021 release.

Washington will star alongside Alicia Vikander. The duo will play a couple on holiday in Greece who fall into a violent conspiracy that has tragic consequences. The film was shot on location last year with Ferdinando Cito Filomarino directing from a script by Kevin Rice.

Filomarino was the second unit director on Luca Guadagnino‘s Call Me By Your Name and Suspiria. This will be his English-language debut.

This is just the latest deal a streaming service has secured for an already-shot film. With the pandemic still in full effect and no indication as to when cinemas will be able to re-open and resume normal service, expect to see plenty more deals like this as streamers stockpile content and traditional studios aim to make some money back on projects they may not be able to release theatrically.

Washington just came off Tenet and recently signed on to star in David O. Russell‘s next movie alongside Christian Bale and Margot Robbie.

Netflix already paid around $30 million for the aforementioned Malcolm & Marie, which also stars Zendaya. No word on when that will be getting released though.

Washington continues to rise up the Hollywood ladder. Not bad for a former NFL running back (really!).
