New ‘Star Wars’ Movie In The Works With ‘Sleight’ Director & ‘Luke Cage’ Writer | Film News

With the Skywalker Saga in the rearview mirror after a less-than-positive finale, there’s been plenty of talk as to where Disney takes Star Wars next. Rian Johnson‘s potential trilogy is still shrouded in darkness, and MCU guru Kevin Feige has his own movie in development. Plus, what’s happening with the spinoffs? But now we have some developments.

Another new Star Wars movie is indeed in the works. Sleight director J.D. Dillard and Luke Cage writer Matt Owens are reportedly teaming up for the project at Lucasfilm. However, it’s unclear right now whether this is a tentpole movie intended for a cinematic release or precious content for Disney+. Dillard and Owens being (relative) unknowns to most Star Wars fans perhaps implies the latter, but we’ll see.

There are no known plot or character details right now. It’s also unclear if Dillard will direct should the project move forward, but it is said to be unrelated to the potential projects from Johnson and Feige’s work with the franchise.

The next Star Wars movie isn’t scheduled until December 2022, although Disney are attempting to augment the franchise even further with the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, which has been received positively and has season two already scheduled for October. As mentioned, it’s possible that this Dillard/Owens project is for Disney+, which would mean it wouldn’t have to adhere to the scheduled release dates.

Dillard has directed two films but also worked as a part of J.J. Abrams‘ crew on The Force Awakens, so this isn’t a totally new experience for him. And Owens already has experience with Marvel, so even though they aren’t household names, they are used to working with big franchises. We’ll wait for more news regarding this project, and whether it is indeed for Disney+ or not.

The streaming service has plenty of other Star Wars content in the works, including a Rogue One prequel series and a series based on Obi-Wan Kenobi in the works, with Ewan McGregor set to reprise the title role.
