Rowan Blanchard & Auli’i Cravalho To Star in Hulu’s Queer Teen Romance Movie

Rowan Blanchard and Auli’i Cravalho have been cast in Hulu’s untitled queer teen romance movie, which has Sammi Cohen attached to direct alongside Natasha Lyonne and Maya Rudolph as producers.

The film will revolve around two high schoolers who fall in love after meeting on the track team. Blanchard will play Paige, an aspiring artist forced to get involved with athletics. While the team is captained by her longtime crush, she unexpectedly falls for one of her teammates, AJ, played by Cravalho, a track star who is struggling to break out of her twin sister’s shadow.

Cravalho is best known for playing the titular role in Disney’s Moana. She also played another Disney princess in ABC’s live production of The Little Mermaid. She’ll next be seen in Amazon’s new series The Power, which follows a group of teenage girls who develop a special power to electrocute people.

Cravalho is also attached to star in the film adaptation of hit musical Spring Awakening, a coming-of-age story set in 19th-century Germany and centers around a group of teens who discover their sexuality, and must contend with their village’s strict rules around it.

Blanchard is an up-and-comer best known for her roles on sitcoms such as Girl Meets World and The Goldbergs. She also had a role in Ava DuVernay‘s A Wrinkle In Time and is a series regular on TNT’s Snowpiercer series, which was just renewed for a fourth season.

Kirsten King and Casey Rackham have written the script for the film, which is being produced by Depth Of Field, Animal Pictures, and American High.

Depth Of Field and Animal Pictures had begun development on the film before joining forces with American High, who worked with Hulu on previous films such as Big Time Adolescence, Plan B, and The Binge.
