Samuel L. Jackson To Play Chris Rock’s Father In ‘Saw’ Reboot | Film News

The new Saw movie – whether it’s a spinoff or a reboot, no one is quite sure – has added a familiar face to its cast. Samuel L. Jackson has signed on to play Chris Rock‘s father in the film. The new film is based on an original idea by Rock, who will also co-star and produce the film.

Rock is playing a police detective investigating a series of heinous crimes. Max Minghella (The Social Network) is playing Rock’s partner, and Marisol Nichols (Riverdale) is his boss. Filming is currently underway.

Specific plot details are under wraps. It’s telling however, that longtime Saw producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules are returning, while Darren Lynn Bousman – director of three Saw films – is back at the helm. Not only that, but Jigsaw screenwriters Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg have penned the screenplay.

So all the behind-the-scenes players are Saw regulars. Would you be surprised if this film kicked off another seven-movie franchise?

The Saw franchise hasn’t been relevant for a while. 2010’s Saw 3D was the sign that the series – and fan interest in it – was out of life. However, 2017’s Jigsaw – a film that no one seems to remember already – did gross over $100 million at the box office. So clearly, after a break, some interest has returned.

Plus, Lionsgate weren’t going to let a profitable franchise lay dormant forever. And letting Rock take a crack at it in his own unique way is a far more interesting reboot/spinoff idea than most. We’ll see what he comes up with.

The film currently does not have a release date, but the likelihood is that we’ll see this new Saw sometime in October 2020.
