Selena Gomez has signed on to star in the psychological horror-thriller Dollhouse, which is being developed at STXfilms. She will also produce under her July Moon Productions banner along with Shawn Levy and his company 21 Laps.
The film is excitedly being described as Black Swan in the fashion world, set in the upper echelons of New York City. Michael Paisley has written the script. That’s pretty much all anyone knows right now, but the film has reportedly been developed specifically as a starring vehicle for Gomez.
STXfilms chairman Adam Fogelson said in a statement: “Selena’s involvement is an exciting direction for this project. She is supremely talented as both a star and a producer. Teaming Selena with Shawn and Dan’s expertise in the horror-thriller genre will elevate Dollhouse and we couldn’t be more thrilled by the way this is being developed”.
This is the kind of starring role we haven’t seen Gomez take on in recent years, maybe ever. She currently stars and executive produces HBO Max’s Selena+Chef, while she’s also set to produce and star alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short in Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building.
She’s also produced recent Sony romcom The Broken Hearts Gallery and Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why.
As you can see, Gomez’s game recently has been more in the producing realm than actually in front of the camera. This will be an exciting departure from that. “Black Swan but…” is always a premise worth getting interested in. Hopefully Dollhouse can live up to the comparison to the Oscar-winning film.
